My paintings explore the complex interplay of strangeness and intimacy between the individual and the environment. These works draw inspiration from my lived experiences — from the intimate spaces of home to distant lands across oceans. In today’s age of technical images, spatial and temporal differences are often compressed into homogenized virtual imagery. In response, I deliberately choose the “ancient” practice of hand-painting to delve into those unique, embodied, and subtle experiences.
For me, painting is a form of communication between the visible and the invisible. At a time when technological power expands boundlessly and human value is gradually diminished — perhaps due to our forgetting of the transcendental dimension — I seek through painting to re-intuit the visible world obscured by preconceptions, along with the mysteries and revelations that shine within it.
I believe that visual phenomena themselves are gifts given to the painter. In familiar domestic spaces and unfamiliar journeys alike, they arrive unexpectedly and irresistibly in myriad forms. My paintings are almost always summoned by these prior-arriving gifts. Through the lived bodily act of painting, these works collectively constitute a kind of diary, recording — directly or indirectly — the traces of my existence in the world.
Ultimately, through an individual perspective and language, I strive to restore the connections between human beings, the world, and the invisible, and to present them as paintings. I hope my art may serve as a way of receiving and responding to revelation.
